Your challenges
High downstream dewatering costs
Dewatering thin biological sludge directly requires equipment to process large volumes of water along with the solids. By thickening sludge before final dewatering, plants can significantly reduce the volume entering downstream equipment and potentially reduce the required equipment size, investment and energy consumption.
Limited biological treatment capacity
Increasing sludge concentrations within an existing wastewater treatment process can help optimize the use of available biological treatment capacity. Effective sludge separation and thickening can support better solids management without automatically requiring additional civil infrastructure.
Fluctuating sludge characteristics
Sludge properties and hydraulic flows can vary significantly during wastewater treatment operation. Operators need a filtration system that can handle changing flows and sludge characteristics while maintaining reliable solids capture and allowing the filtration process to be adjusted when required.
How does it work?
Our process
NDF is an inside-fed rotary drum filter that uses gravity to separate liquid from suspended solids. The drum is covered with an exchangeable filter cloth with different available pore sizes, allowing the filtration system to be selected according to the application and sludge characteristics.
As sludge enters the rotating drum, the liquid passes through the filter cloth while suspended solids are retained on the inside of the drum. The retained solids form a filter cake that is transported towards the sludge discharge as the drum rotates.
The NDF is equipped with a self-cleaning system to maintain filtration performance during continuous operation. Spray cleaning with water is also possible when required.

An appropriately selected filter cloth determines the separation characteristics of the system. NDF filter cloths are available in different pore sizes to accommodate different sludge characteristics and filtration requirements.
The filtrate leaves the drum while the thickened or dewatered sludge is continuously discharged for further treatment. A self-cleaning system helps prevent the filter cloth from becoming blinded during operation, while spray cleaning with water can also be used where required.
The result is a continuous separation process that reduces the amount of water carried into downstream sludge treatment equipment.
The NDF is available as NDF 200, NDF 300 and NDF 400 configurations.

Our positive impact
NDF provides continuous mechanical separation while reducing the hydraulic and solids load on downstream sludge treatment equipment.
Reduce downstream dewatering requirements
Reducing the volume of sludge entering downstream equipment can enable smaller dewatering systems and reduce associated investment, energy consumption and operating costs.
Efficient sludge thickening and dewatering
NDF is specifically designed for dewatering excess sludge from biological treatment systems. By removing water before final sludge processing, NDF helps prepare the sludge for subsequent dewatering or treatment stages.
High-quality solids capture
The NDF uses specialized exchangeable filter cloths supported by a perforated drum. Filter cloth pore sizes can be selected according to the application, with the original product range covering 40–250 µm.
This enables the system to be configured for different solids separation requirements and sludge characteristics.
Flexible and reliable operation
NDF is designed to handle fluctuations in flow and can be adapted to different solid-liquid separation applications. The filter cloths and drum elements are exchangeable, while the stainless-steel construction provides a robust solution for continuous wastewater treatment operation.

Wastewater treatment for poultry processing to ensure compliant discharge – Vinnytsia Poultry Farm
Project’s context & challenges
Myronivsky Hleboproduct (MHP) is a dynamic and fast-growing company in the Ukraine, based on the unique model of vertical integration. MHP is one of the leaders of the agrarian market in poultry segment. LLC Vinnytsia Poultry Farm is the largest poultry farm in Europe, and is set up with equipment using the most up to date technology.
In order to treat the wastewater of the factory, Nijhuis designed and realized a complete pre-treatment, secondary treatment and tertiary treatment system to discharge clean effluent into the Ukrainian river. The water is produced by the slaughter lines (+/- 90%) and the remaining water (+/- 10%) comes from the rendering and hatchery production, crate box washers, car washers and municipal water.

Frequently asked questions
Sludge enters the inside of the rotating drum and is separated through gravity filtration. Liquid passes through the filter cloth while suspended solids are retained on the drum surface and transported towards the solids discharge as the drum rotates.
NDF is designed for the dewatering of excess biological sludge and can handle biological excess sludge up to 6% dry solids. It can also be applied to industrial effluent filtration and other solid-liquid separation applications.
Yes. NDF can be installed as part of a complete sludge treatment process or supplied as a standalone product. It can be positioned upstream of subsequent dewatering equipment to reduce the volume that needs to be processed downstream.
We offer three configurations: NDF 200, NDF 300 and NDF 400. The models have different drum lengths while maintaining a 1,000 mm width and a listed power consumption of 0.55 kW.
