Project’s context & challenges

The Wave Desalination Plant is one of Abu Dhabi’s flagship desalination developments, designed to provide a reliable source of freshwater for the region. To support large-scale seawater desalination, the project required an advanced pretreatment solution capable of handling fluctuating seawater conditions while ensuring consistent water quality for downstream membrane filtration.

Seawater quality can vary significantly due to seasonal algal blooms, suspended solids, and changing environmental conditions. Without effective pretreatment, these fluctuations can reduce reverse osmosis membrane performance, increase maintenance requirements, and drive up operating costs.

To address these challenges, The Wave selected Nijhuis Saur Industries to deliver a high-performance High-Rate Dissolved Air Flotation (HR-DAF) pretreatment system. The solution was designed to provide robust solids removal, protect critical membrane assets, and support reliable freshwater production at a treatment capacity exceeding 110 million imperial gallons per day (approximately 500,000 m³/day).

Solution

Nijhuis Saur Industries supplied a High-Rate Concrete i-DAF (HR-DAF) pretreatment system specifically engineered for large-scale desalination applications.

The solution combines patented clog-free aeration technology with an integrated plate pack design to generate fine air bubbles that efficiently separate suspended solids, algae, and flocculated particles from seawater. This advanced separation process ensures stable feed water quality for downstream reverse osmosis systems while minimizing operational risks.

Designed with a compact footprint and optimized hydraulic performance, the HR-DAF system delivers reliable pretreatment performance under changing seawater conditions and supports efficient, sustainable desalination operations.
