Project’s context & challenges

The Metsä Fibre Kemi bioproduct mill produces 1.5 million tons of softwood and hardwood pulp annually, used to manufacture a wide range of renewable products such as cardboard, tissue paper, specialty papers, and printing paper. In addition to pulp production, the mill significantly increases the generation of valuable co-products, including tall oil, turpentine, and bioenergy.

As the largest investment ever made in the Finnish forest industry, the Kemi bioproduct mill operates entirely without fossil fuels and ranks among the world’s leading facilities in terms of energy, material, and environmental efficiency.

Energy efficiency, low water consumption, and minimized emissions were key criteria in selecting process equipment. Metsä Fibre required highly reliable and resource-efficient water treatment solutions capable of supporting ambitious environmental targets while ensuring consistent production quality. Nijhuis Saur Industries’ partner Flootech was selected to deliver advanced water treatment systems contributing to this state-of-the-art and future-proof bioproduct mill.

Customer benefits

High-quality process and demineralized water

Reliable production of high-purity process water and salt-free water ensures stable operations and supports high production efficiency.

Reduced energy and chemical consumption

Optimized treatment processes significantly lower operational resource use and environmental impact.

Extremely low water consumption

Internal recycling of reject water contributes to minimal specific water consumption across the bioproduct mill.

Supporting world-class environmental performance

Best available technologies enable Metsä Fibre to meet ambitious material efficiency, energy, and environmental targets.

Solution

Flootech, part of NSI, contributed to one of the most efficient wood processing mills in the northern hemisphere by delivering and commissioning a complete water intake and treatment solution.

The installation includes a water intake plant, water treatment plant, demineralized water treatment plant, and condensate polishing treatment plant, all designed to ensure high water quality, operational reliability, and optimized resource efficiency.

The system significantly reduces energy and chemical consumption while enabling reject water recycling within the treatment process, helping the mill achieve exceptionally low specific water consumption levels aligned with its sustainability ambitions.
