Why SIX®?
SIX® was developed by PWNT to remove dissolved contaminants early in the treatment process, improving downstream performance and helping utilities address increasingly complex water quality challenges. The technology effectively removes natural organic matter (NOM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), sulphates, nitrates, phosphates and, depending on the resin selected, PFAS and other emerging contaminants.
Today, SIX® is successfully applied to full-scale drinking water facilities in Europe, with pilots supporting adoption in additional markets around the world.
Three key innovations
The next generation of SIX® introduces three major engineering improvements focused on resin regeneration and distribution. These innovations reduce footprint, simplify operation, and lower both capital and operating costs, while maintaining the proven treatment performance of SIX®.
A simplified process layout
The fresh resin vessel has been eliminated, while settling and storage functions have been integrated into the hopper and regeneration vessels. This significantly simplifies the process layout and removes the need for the regeneration column that previously required deep excavation works.
More efficient resin distribution
A direct ejector feed system now replaces stirred resin storage, enabling more stable resin dosing while reducing energy consumption. Depending on operating conditions, power consumption for this part of the process can be reduced by 6-12%.
Semi-continuous regeneration
Regeneration has evolved from a batch-based operation to a semi-continuous process with fully integrated resin handling. This gentler approach reduces mechanical stress on equipment and lowers resin valve cycles from five to seven operations per regeneration cycle to just one, contributing to improved reliability and longer equipment life.

Ready for the Future
The new concept is already being demonstrated at the PWNT R&D Centre, where an existing SIX pilot installation has been adapted to simulate the redesigned process. This allows PWNT experts to validate and optimize the key innovations under realistic operating conditions while supporting future full-scale implementations.
