Project's context & challenges

As part of a major urban redevelopment in Brooklyn, New York, Two Trees Management partnered with Natural Systems Utilities (NSU), part of Nijhuis Saur Industries, to reduce potable water demand and mitigate combined sewer overflows. The challenge: design and build a compact, district-scale water reuse facility that could treat blackwater from five mixed-use buildings and supply high-quality non-potable water for reuse — all within a dense urban footprint.

Key figures

Capacity: 400,000 gallons/day (≈1,500 m³/day)
5 buildings served
Number of assets

Customer benefits

Reduces potable water demand across five buildings

Minimizes combined sewer overflows into the East River

Supplies non-potable water for cooling towers, toilets, irrigation, and sidewalk cleaning

Compact design fits within <10,000 ft² of below-ground space

Complies with NYCDEP and state/federal reuse regulations

Solution

Natural Systems Utilities (NSU), part of Saur Group, designed, built, and is operating a decentralized water reuse facility at the Domino Sugar redevelopment site. The system treats blackwater from five buildings and produces high-quality non-potable water for on-site reuse. Excess treated water is safely discharged to the East River, improving water quality and reducing strain on municipal infrastructure. The facility is a model for sustainable urban water management and aligns with New York City’s long-term environmental goals.

Scope of supply

  • Design and construction of decentralized reuse facility
  • Integration with five mixed-use buildings
  • Advanced treatment system for blackwater
  • On-site commissioning, training, and operations
  • Long-term monitoring and compliance support

Applied solutions

  • District-scale blackwater reuse for urban sustainability
  • Compact, modular design for space-constrained environments
  • Advanced treatment for non-potable reuse applications
  • Smart operations to ensure compliance and performance
  • One-stop-shop delivery from design to long-term operation
