Festivals can double or even triple the water demand of a small city for several days. In regions already struggling with drought or limited groundwater, this puts extreme pressure on local utilities. Supplying large volumes of drinking water for activities like toilet flushing or cleaning is neither sustainable nor efficient. Organizers need solutions that reduce reliance on scarce drinking water sources.

When tens of thousands of visitors use facilities at the same time, wastewater volumes spike dramatically. Local treatment plants, often designed to serve small communities, cannot handle these sudden surges. This can lead to untreated discharges, odors, and environmental damage. Temporary on-site solutions are essential to prevent overloading existing infrastructure.

Human urine contains valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate, key ingredients for fertilizer production. At most festivals, these resources are flushed away and lost, while the agriculture sector relies on synthetic fertilizers that are energy-intensive to produce. By capturing urine at the source, events can help close the nutrient cycle and reduce CO₂ emissions.

Festivals are increasingly expected to be leaders in sustainability — reducing waste, cutting emissions, and demonstrating climate action. Water is a highly visible element in this effort: by reusing water, recovering resources, and showing visitors the impact of their choices, events can become powerful showcases of circular practices.

European and national legislation on water quality and treatment is becoming stricter. From 2027 onwards, festivals must comply with tighter discharge standards and avoid problems like ammonium peaks at local treatment plants. Meeting these requirements demands innovative, scalable, and mobile water technologies that can be deployed quickly and effectively at event sites.
