On Monday, May 13, 2024, Nijhuis Saur Industries launched the Grey Water Treatment 2.0 solution at IFAT in Munich, Germany - the worldwide no. 1 environmental technology trade fair, in the presence of Mirjam van Buchem from NWP. To address today’s water management challenges in real estate and disaster relief areas and the increasing need for “on-demand” clean water, Nijhuis Saur Industries (NSI) has invested in a new innovative asset which has been added to the NSI mobile water solutions fleet.

Industry sectors and municipalities are able to locally treat rain, surface, and shower water (grey water) and re-use it as toilet or irrigation water using a mobile water treatment unit. With the growing urban population worldwide, decentralized water treatment will contribute to sustainable water solutions for our current and future cities.

Peter Scheer, Industry Development Manager of Nijhuis Saur Industries, about this state-of-the art solution: “Our Grey Water Treatment unit creates value where others, unfortunately, still might see grey water as a waste stream. Decentralized treatment of grey water has already been proven to result in less freshwater demand and contributing to a circular water solution. Our proprietary technology applied in various buildings worldwide turns wastewater into suitable water for reuse in toilet flushing and irrigation.

Among our latest endeavors, in collaboration with the Saur Group and the Orient Express Racing Team, the French challenger for the 37th edition of the America's Cup, is the installation of this innovative solution. As the official water technologies supplier for the French basecamp, this project has already begun to contribute to the conservation of water resources surrounding this year's America's Cup event in Barcelona. The newly installed and fully operational grey water treatment unit ensures the production of high-quality water meeting stringent standards.

Treated water, derived from rain and shower sources, can be effectively reused for toilet flushing and boat washing. This comprehensive system for managing and recycling wastewater, encompassing both grey and black water, is expected to halve water consumption at the French base and significantly reduce overall water usage by 50%.

Menno M. Holterman, CEO of Nijhuis Saur Industries, about this new game-changing innovation: “In the tradition of our now 120-year-old company, innovation is part of DNA. The launch of this game-changing Grey Water Treatment 2.0 solution at IFAT shows once again our dedication to our clients and to the water market that our growth and investment ambitions can make a real sustainable impact. To further build on this, at the beginning of this year, we acquired Natural Systems Utilities, a US-based company which has more than 40 years of experience in the treatment and reuse of water for decentralized markets like commercial buildings. For us, the future is water and the launch of this state-of-the art unit is an excellent example of how to make this happen.

Through using this unit, real estate companies will be able to reduce drinking water use by at least 30%. Next to reducing the demand for drinking water and the need for water companies to extract groundwater from the soil, using this solution will have a positive impact on groundwater levels and will reduce subsidence and damage to properties (caused by drought).

All of this contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future, and we are proud to have added this innovation to our portfolio, which enables us to keep helping our clients to restore and close the water loop and continue our #MissionWater.”
