Our Story

Since 1984, Natural Systems Utilities has led the transformation of the water reuse industry. What began as a specialized engineering firm has grown into a national leader delivering end-to-end solutions — from design and construction to operations and ownership.

Through strategic growth and industry-shaping projects, we’ve helped define the standards of modern water reuse. While others speak of experience, we helped build the industry — and continue to push it forward with every project.

Company History

Natural Systems Utilities has been at the forefront of sustainable water solutions for decades. Our legacy is built on industry firsts, groundbreaking innovation, and a commitment to driving water reuse forward. Key milestones include:

1987 – Delivered the first U.S. pharmaceutical onsite reuse system (Bristol-Myers, NJ)

1988 – Developed the first decentralized community wastewater system (Bloomsbury, NJ)

1991 – Completed our first Design-Build-Operate (DBO) project (Knowlton Township, NJ)

2000 – Installed the first in-building residential high-rise reuse system (The Solaire, Battery Park, NY)

2002 – Built a 250,000+ GPD reuse system for Gillette Stadium

2005 – Replaced a failing municipal system for the St. Croix Chippewa Indians in Wisconsin

2011 – Received 22 awards at the Wastewater Operations Conference

2012 – Launched NSU through Series C financing; implemented laundry reuse at The New School (NYC)

2019 – Became a Certified B Corporation, acquired Bennett Environmental, and completed major reuse systems including Microsoft’s Mountain View Campus

2023 – Acquired by the Saur Group, strengthening our position as the leading water reuse provider in North America

Industry Firsts

Natural Systems Utilities has consistently led the way in sustainable water and energy solutions. Our team has delivered multiple industry firsts, including:

  • The first decentralized community onsite wastewater utility in the U.S.
  • The first blackwater reuse system designed in New Jersey (1987)
  • The first in-building system combining thermal energy transfer with non-potable water supply
