Jotem will introduce the technology for small scale industrial applications. NSI and Jotem will jointly commercialize the license of this innovative technology, expanding their comprehensive portfolio of solutions for the removal of micropollutants and pharmaceutical residues, and to reduce the amount of chemicals in water reuse installations. This addition enhances both companies’ ability to offer the best possible solutions for micropollutants removal and reuse of water.
From research to proof
Eddie Broeders, NSI’s Development Manager for the municipal market, stated: “The BODAC installation at NieuWater has consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of BODAC technology in delivering ultra-pure water, where clean effluent from a sewage treatment plant is used as an influent for demineralized water production. The smart combination of ultrafiltration (UF), biological activated carbon filtration (BACF) and reverse osmosis (RO), requires 90% less chemicals compared to conventional processes.
Even after years of operation, the RO membranes do not need replacement, chemical consumption on the RO has been reduced by over 90% and the activated carbon has not been exchanged nor reactivated. We can confidently say that, in municipal wastewater applications, the activated carbon does not need to be replaced for at least 10-15 years, therefore providing significant operational cost reduction and environmental benefits in terms of CO2 and environmental footprint reduction”.
During the last 15 years, the innovative BODAC technology has also been proven to remove significant amounts of micropollutants from wastewater without replacing the activated carbon, as BODAC biologically regenerates activated carbon in this process. As no carbon replacement is required, this provides a substantially lower carbon footprint compared to conventional activated carbon technologies.
By combining BODAC with our MicroOxi (ozone technology), we can provide a full modular installation, achieving efficiencies of over 90% removal of total micropollutants. With our global industrial presence and growing municipal wastewater activities in – amongst others – the Netherlands, UK, North America, Asia Pacific, and the historically strong market presence with Saur in France, we are at the start of a long-term and successful cooperation contributing to a sustainable and resilient future!”
Gerrit Veenendaal, director of NieuWater BV, is incredibly pleased about the collaboration with NSI and Jotem. “We have been conducting research for 5 years to optimize BODAC as a technique for removing micropollutants, such as drug residues, from sewage treatment effluent. Also, for 15 years, this technique has proven to be an excellent pretreatment for reverse osmosis (RO) to protect the membranes from contamination. With NSI and Jotem, this beautiful product can be introduced not only to the Dutch, but also to international markets by two very reputable companies.”
Rob Borgerink, Technical Director at Jotem Water Solutions, is eager to contribute to the further rollout of BODAC technology: “At Jotem, we have been NieuWater’s technology partner throughout the development process, particularly in supplying the pilot installations used to test and optimize the technology. With this license, Jotem is now able to offer this innovative, proven technology to a wide range of companies and industries.”
Henri Veldhuis, Jotem’s Commercial Director, adds, “The world faces a tremendous challenge in providing enough drinkable water, while we continue to dispose of used water. This issue affects not only developing countries, but also regions like the Netherlands and neighboring countries. There is an urgent need for reliable water reuse technologies, and BODAC is a valuable tool in addressing this need.”

About NieuWater B.V. | https://www.nieuwater.com
NieuWater B.V. is a subsidiary of Waterschap Vechtstromen. NieuWater has been producing ultrapure water from the effluent from the sewage treatment plant in Emmen since 2010. This water is intended for industry, particularly oil extraction, but is also extremely suitable for the production of hydrogen. Hardly any chemicals are used to produce this very high quality (0.06 µS/cm). To achieve this, the BODAC technology, among others, was developed. The plant is unique and regularly receives interested parties from all over the world.
About Jotem Water Solutions | https://www.jotem.nl/
Jotem Water Solutions B.V., founded in 1965, provides technology and services to produce water with a specific composition or desired quality. To this end, they develop customized solutions and continuously implement new technology. Increasingly complex water issues also require new insights into water treatment. More effective, efficient, flexible and sustainable. These arise on the Jotem work floor, with its innovative Hydropilots as a result. With its pilot installations, they understand organizational issues and create a pilot to solve the issue. Jotem develops a unique solution step by step, in which they bring together the latest technologies and innovate the market. But above all, it provides solutions with which an organization gets the most out of water. Whatever the challenge might be!
