Closing and restoring the water loop, contributing to a sustainable and resilient future –
by Menno M. Holterman

In 2024, we have added another remarkable year to the history of Nijhuis Saur Industries and the heritage of Nijhuis as a brand. In April 2024, we started to celebrate our Nijhuis 120 years anniversary and in October we brought together a lot of our customers, consultants, suppliers and a large part of our team to discuss our common goal: the future of water, or as we see it: the future is water.

Our phrase ‘the future is water’ represent challenges that we must anticipate as a society and as a company to help our clients. Water is one of the most critical resources for all living things on our planet and the world faces a host of water challenges. In our 120-anniversary year we also look back, which is always needed to look forward. With increasing pressure on the quantity and quality of water, this precious resource is in urgent need of re-evaluation ecologically, socially, economically and technologically.

It is becoming the most important topic for many people, not only to save the lives of millions around the world but also to help a number of industries which require more and more water.

Recognition of the 4R strategy: Reduce, Remove, Reuse, Recover

The market is recognizing our 4R strategy (Reduce, Remove, Reuse, Recover) more and more by awarding us many important orders where we are helping our clients to solve their water challenges. Great examples are orders for delivering drinking water to Singapore, a water treatment plant to a new bioplastic factory in France, or a complete turnkey water reuse plant for one the most sustainable edible oil plants in the world. In addition, the demand for mobile water solutions keeps growing and we’re supporting our clients with new trailers, containers, and mobile skids to ensure the business of our customers keeps flowing.

Especially in desalination, the focus shifts to global and even in Europe we’re facing the negative impacts of droughts. In many countries we must also now think about using not only ground water for drinking water or industrial applications, but also to use sea water, river water or treated wastewater as a new and indispensable source.

Give water back the value it deserves

Water infrastructure is complex, and investments require long-term financing, something many countries, cities, municipalities and industries lack. But by giving everyone responsibility for their actions, the water cycle can be closed. To make this feasible, industries need to change or optimize their processes to utilize every drop of water to minimize water consumption. By implementing sustainability targets, even net zero targets, they are already developing a closed loop that is very close to making their facilities and cities self-sufficient, and provide water the value it deserves.

As #WaterChampions, we see it as our mission to advocate that everyone gives water the value it deserves. We call it #MissionWater and we see it as our mission to help our customers close and restore the water cycle.
