Our story
Byosis was founded in 2009 with the aim to develop new technologies for digestate treatment for Waste-to-Energy sites. In 2022, we became part of NSI, Saur Industrial Water Solutions division.
Gradually we diversified into other markets and have become active in municipal and industrial wastewater solutions, where we offer an attractive alternative for reducing ammonia before an aerobic biological treatment step. This helps to reduce the carbon footprint (by reducing N₂O emissions and recovery of nutrients that would otherwise be destroyed) and enables a flexible operation.
Apart from the supply of the unit we offer supervision during erection, commissioning, performance tests and project management during the entire project. After handover you can choose from a range of services such as periodic inspection, training, helpdesk, remote support and ordering and delivery of spare parts.
Focus is to create complete solutions with our NSI partners with a customer for life approach.
Our ambition is to offer the best value for money to customers who value the principle of Total Cost of Ownership.
Our solutions
We offer standardized solutions to recover resources from digestate and wastewater.
Ammonia stripping and recovery
ByoFlex®: Ammonia stripping and recovery unit for polluting substrates such as (sludge) digestate with high % of solids (suspended and dissolved). The solution can be configured to meet any demand and is very energy efficient and no alkaline needs to be added. The ByoFlex® comes in standard configurations with a throughput of 5, 10 and 20 m3/h to be combined for more throughput (>80 m3/h). The ByoFlex® is also available as a demonstration/rental unit. Check the ByoFlex® page for more information!
Pasteurization
ByoPast®: A modular and complete continuous pasteurisation solution for large throughputs ranging from 10 to 60 m³/h and any multiple.
Additional equipment
- Heat exchanger: a special tube-in-tube heat exchanger unique due to its modular nature. The heat exchanger can be designed to meet any demands (heating, cooling, heat recovery) and is designed for viscous and polluting substrates.
- CIPR®: Acontainerized or skid mounted modular CIP system (clean-in-place) for the heat exchanger and heat recovery tubes.
The Byosis Service Level Agreement helps clients to obtain the best possible performance and reliability of your installation with maximum availability. We offer three main services:
- Service desk: The advantage of direct access to the Byosis service desk gives quick availability of a Byosis technician or specialist in the situation of an operational-, process- or technical problem. First, we check whether the problem can be solved remotely. If the problem cannot be solved remotely, we can provide quick on-site assistance (depending on your location). We can also assist you with providing spare parts and fast delivery in case of a breakdown or calamity. We also keep critical parts in stock, which can be quickly shipped and/or replaced in case of failure.
- Remote inspection reports: The installation will be at least weekly monitored. Analysis of alarms and process deviations are filtered out. Periodical reports are shared with a summary of essential parameters and findings. Due to the extensive installed base of Byosis, we have a wide range of experience and knowhow about operating the ByoFlex® installation(s) as efficiently and reliably as possible.
- Site visits: During 2 working days, the complete Byosis installation is checked by Byosis technicians on the general conditions, safety and performance. During an additional day, feedback and advice is provided. Additionally, training is provided to operators and questions will be answered and followed up. After the visit, the analyses are assessed in consultation with our specialists and the results and recommendations are processed and shared via a site visit report.

ByoFlex® 20 for industrial food waste plant in the United States
Project’s context and challenges
The client is collecting and digesting food waste on industrial scale, resulting in the production of biomethane which is injected into the grid. The digestate after digestion is separated and the liquid fraction is discharged via the city sewer. The client’s challenge was to select a robust and reliable waste water treatment solution which could deal with varying nitrogen loading after the digesters combined with varying hydraulic loadings, while maintaining the city’s stringent nitrogen emission levels.
The client chose to implement a ByoFlex® installation. The liquid fraction/wastewater from the digester, is drastically reduced in ammonium with the single ByoFlex® 20 unit. As result of the flexible operation window of the ByoFlex® 20 unit, the downstream MBBR is designed significantly smaller due to the reduced and stabilized ammonium/ammonia loading. As a result of this, the plant is able to consistently reach the stringent nitrogen emission levels.

ByoFlex® 2×10 for agricultural digester in Veneto region, Italy
Project’s context and challenges
The client is digesting agricultural feedstocks combined with a large portion of ‘dry’ chicken manure. The aim is producing biomethane to be injected into the grid. Because of the high nitrogen content in the feedstock the client’s challenge is preventing ammonium inhibition in the AD’s biology, and therewith stagnation of biogas production. Simply diluting with fresh water isn’t feasible since this would result in unreasonable digestate discharge volumes.
Ammonium Control and Reuse – As the solution the thin fraction is drastically reduced in ammonium with the ByoFlex®2×10 system, after which the major part of the thin fraction is pumped back (recycled) to the front end of the AD to dilute the incoming feedstock.
End-of-Pipe – The remaining thin fraction is stripped because therewith it is being land applied on reduced land area (in the region) which significantly lowers transport and spreading costs.

ByoFlex® 5 for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Germany
Context
Wastewater (vapor condensate) from the digested sludge and the condensate from sludge drying, is drastically reduced in ammonium with ByoFlex® during the tourist peak periods on the island Rügen. The existing WWTP as a result can deal with increased hydraulic loadings, with reduced ammonium/ammonia concentrations. Herewith the Rügen plant is also ready for more stringent nitrogen emission levels in the future, without the need to expand the existing WWTP.
Solution
Byosis delivered and supervised the installation of the ByoFlex®5 unit, consisting of Stripping column and 2 scrubber columns including heat exchangers with heat recovery. The system is configured to customer-specific parameters, such as the waste waters viscosity, variable throughput, dry matter content and the specific wastewater components. During the initial months of operation, Byosis ensures optimal and reliable performance by giving guidance on systems operation.

ByoFlex® 5 Mobile Ammonia Stripper for a Dutch water board
Context
A Dutch water board collects sludge from various wastewater treatment plants for processing in a digester to produce methane gas. The effluent from the digester is pretreated to reduce the ammonia load, thereby relieving the burden on the water treatment plant. The ByoFlex® Mobile unit has been tested to support a well-informed decision on how to replace the Anammox system.
Solution
Byosis installed the ByoFlex® Mobile unit for 3 months and tested the specific effluent in collaboration with the client. During the test period various scenarios are successful studied. Byosis is now, in cooperation with the client, configuring the final configuration.

ByoPast® for Waste-to-Energy plant
Context
At a waste-to-energy plant in central Italy, a customer needed to pasteurize the digestate flow for further processing, while using a minimum amount of heat.
Solution
Byosis delivered and installed the ByoPast® unit consisting of 3 pasteurization vessels for a continuous flow of 10 m3/hr. The system was adapted to customer-specific parameters, such as the viscosity and dry matter content of the process water. During the initial months of operation, Byosis provided guidance on system operation and cleaning, as well as on ensuring optimal and reliable performance.
